Before I hang up my China-journalist hat, I'm trying to get out another piece or two on some of the places I saw. I just wrote an article for travel site BootsnAll on Eight Lesser-Known Places to Visit in China. It's some of my favorite spots, including historical Cuandixia outside of Beijing, weird colonial enclave Gulang Yu, and coastal town Dalian, home to an annual beer festival.
The Beijinger, a magazine I used to write for, added a few more ideas. There's so much more to see than the usual tourist spots—chime in if you want with your own additions in the comments.
